One of 11 children, he graduated from Goshen Biblical Seminary in 1960. From 1960-65, Schumm was co-pastor of East Zorra Mennonite Church in Tavistock, Ontario. Davao City, Mindanao, Philippines - The annual Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute here May 1-19 drew 165 participants from 17 Asian countries. Begun in 2000 to help peace workers address conflicts in Mindanao, the institute has blossomed into an international venue for peace training. It is sponsored by Mennonite Central Committee, Catholic Relief Services, and the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development. Sessions this year examined peace-building and the arts, designing community initiatives and the role of religion in conflict and peace.

New Hamburg and Winnipeg - The 36th annual Ontario Mennonite Relief Sale in New Hamburg, Ontario, on May 24-25 raised $275,000 for Mennonite Central Committee. Once again, the main attraction was the quilt auction which raised close to $136,000. The top-priced quilt sold for $5,500. Two antique tractors and a 1938 Plymouth were sold by auction. The ninth Manitoba sale, May 31-June 1, raised an estimated $113,000 before expenses. This was the first year in a new location-the campus of Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg. Along with the usual quilt auction, baked goods and craft sales, were activities for children, including clowns, a dunk tank and "Penny Power" collection. While the move to the campus provided lots of room to spread out, there was probably less opportunity for walk-through traffic than at The Forks, site of previous sales.
