New York, N.Y.-Mennonite Disaster Service assumed that traditional rebuilding skills would not be needed here in the wake of September 11, but more than 100 MDS volunteers have been helping Mennonite churches in the city repair their buildings so they can better minister through the MDS Restoring Hope Project. Seven churches requested help for pouring concrete, hanging drywall, replacing heating systems, renovating kitchens and installing new lighting. Due to overwhelming support, the project is currently not in need of additional funds or volunteers.

London, Ont.-On January 24, Valleyview Mennonite Church lost one of its pillars with the death of Delford Zehr. Del and Grace were charter members of the church when it was founded in 1962. Del's many years of leadership on church council and committees have left an indelible mark on the structure and ethos of Valleyview-its sense of community and its commitment to social justice and service. He was a member of the Valleyview Care Team until his death. His love of woodworking is apparent throughout the building. He also sang in the Valleyview Male Chorus. Del was a former manager of Provident Bookstores in Kitchener and London. We mourn his loss, we celebrate his life and give thanks to God for his spirit which is with us.

Wellesley, Ont.-Julie Ellison White began as pastor at Wellesley Mennonite on January 1 where she will work with continuing pastor, Ray Martin. At the installation service, speaker Ingrid Loepp Thiessen invited the congregation to celebrate the addition to their "building crew." Inspired by I Corin-thians 3:10-17, she said, "You are God's building, a building in the making. God needs you as builders and workers. Today there's a new master builder on the site!" Muriel Bechtel, minister of pastoral services for Mennonite Church Eastern Canada, led the covenant celebration. After music by "Quarteto Christo," the service closed with the words of congregational chair Terry Janzen: "As carpenters of God's kingdom, may we be faithful to the blueprints the great architect, God, holds for us!"
